Social Events 2020

Synchronous fun

Every day you can look forward to two opportunities to get social or just sit back and be entertained!

  • During the inter-session break we will be hosting a live Twitch Stream paired with a social activity.
  • After the main program each day (except for Friday) we have an after-hours social.

Monday

10:15 – 10:20 (PDT) – Twitch stream

Who remembers the heady days of 2008, when Second Life was going to be the future of libraries? Well, if the ALA had taken up bioterrorism, things could’ve worked out much differently! Please join us in between sessions for a journey through still-thriving Virtual Worlds, during which the most digitally intrepid of the Access 2020 organizing committee will debase himself by making friends with everyone he meets, stealing planes, and trying not to be thrown in virtual debtor’s prison.

10:20 – 10:30 (PDT) – Cook-along with Amy’s Food Corner

The conference experience is incomplete without good food shared with friends and colleagues. Let’s eat together in spirit with these easy recipes for breakfast, lunch, and a snack that will supplement your ACCESS experience. Cook along with the livestream at the Monday mid-session break to make a veggie chili that will last the week. (Note: For optimal cook-along participation, please prep your veggies in advance). And we’ve got your pub night covered with ACCESS-themed cocktails and mocktails! And don’t forget to show us your food pics using the conference hashtag #accessWWW

1:15 – 3:15 (PDT) – Opening Reception

The Opening Reception will take place in Gather.town, a platform that combines video chat with an 8-bit video game-like environment where you can move avatars around a virtual space. If you registered for the reception, we will email you a URL and password. Because Access 2020 was supposed to take place in Vancouver this year, we’ve tried to recreate a little portion of the Vancouver waterfront for you to explore. There will be a variety of virtual spaces for you to hang out and mingle in, so if you’re trying to meet up with friends, take a gander at our Getting Started doc and start making some plans!

Tuesday

10:30 – 10:35 (PDT) – Twitch stream

10:35 – 10:45 (PDT) – Pet meet and greet

Do you have a furry, floofy, or generally non-human companion? Introduce them! Bring your pet on camera Tuesday, 10:35-10:45 (during the break). If you want to participate raise your hand in the main conference Zoom webinar and we’ll give you temporary powers to share your screen. Have a lot to say? Post a video or photo of your pet to #AccessWWW.

12:30 – on (PDT)– Trivia

Join us for an exciting game of Trivia including categories such as “Canadian holidays described by an American”. To participate, stay in the main Zoom Webinar after the conference program and you will be given further instructions.

Wednesday

10:30 – 10:45 (PDT) – Twitch stream

1:30 – 2:30 (PDT) – Mentoring meetup

Calling all experienced librarians to share their knowledge and insight with those in the early stages of their career. You know you’re right about everything, why not share it with the next generation? Sign up as a mentor or mentee and have a productive discussion about the finer details of our profession.

Sign up here to be a mentor or a mentee!

3pm – on (PDT) – Pub and games night

Stick around for our post Hackfest/Workshops pub night! This year we’re going to do it a little bit differently. Some of our intrepid volunteers (yes, you too can volunteer!) will be hosting games on various platforms. Bring your favourite beverage or we’ve got some suggestions here. We will start the pub crawl from a Zoom meeting (connection details will be sent to all conference participants day-of) and see where the night takes us.

Sign up here for or a planned game night or to host something new!

Thursday

10:30 – 10:45 (PDT) – Goat cam

12:45 – 1:15 – Yoga

A 45 minute session to help break up the Zooming with our friends at https://www.colorsofyogaraleigh.com/.

Friday

10:30 – 10:35 (PDT) – Twitch stream

10:35 – 10:45 (PDT) – Forest Bathing

Tune in for green space time with tree walks, and other natural settings. We’re sorry you missed getting to visit Vancouver, Canada, so we’ll be sharing some of our local scenery – plus scenery from other organizers’ hometowns! Find our greenspace content on our social media channels, and Friday’s mid-session break. Want to share some of your local greenspace with us? Use our conference hashtag #accessWWW

Asynchronous

No time to participate in synchronous activities? No problem! Join in on our any-time programme!

Access 2020 Minetest

Like a break from Zoom? Come check out the Access 2020 Minetest World! Minetest is an open source 3D voxel game world with a more than passing resemblance to Minecraft. Ride the train to FutureDome, build your dream in the Hackfest build area, visit the Computer Lab, and marvel at Minotaur in the Labyrinth. Most importantly, add some blocks to Exploding Thing, a collaborative construction that we will ceremoniously blow up at the end of the conference.

See https://webapp.library.uvic.ca/jdurno/minetest/ for how to connect to Minetest, and what to do when you arrive. The server address and password will be distributed to Access attendees by email the week of the conference. Hope to see you there!
